Against the unsustainable G8 university summit

On the 17th 18th and 19th of May an important event, the G8 University Summit, will be held in Italy, in the city of Turin

sponsored
by the CRUI (Conference of Chancellors of Italian Universities), to
whom will participate the chancellors and presidents of the
universities of the member states of the G8, together with those of
many other countries around the world. The
object of the meeting is to propose itself as a direct referring point
for the G8 of the heads of State and Government  who will meet in  the
island of Sardinia (Italy)
L’Aquila (Italy) next summer. The meeting has given itself
the objective to advise the great leaders of the world about the
problems the humanity and the planet are facing, basing on the supposed
"neutral and objective" character of the knowledge produced by
universities. We are all well aware of  the fact that the G8 has no
credibility being clearly responsible for the current global crisis.

Furthermore it’s evident that it’s a paradox that is this same institution the
one who wants to solve a crisis that has been responsible for creating
it by letting the few decide on the fate of billions of people over the
course of the years, influencing the international relationships and
the economic and social politics. It’s therefore unacceptable that the
chancellors, considering themselves representative of the whole world
of the university, are now going  to speak with the member states of
the G8 legitimizing, in such a manner, the political-economic system
proposed by them. Obviously this has not surprised us considering the
central role that the university and the production of knowledge have
in the restructuring process of the global system that today is keeping
on reproducing itself with great difficulty through the crisis.
During the summit will be proposed the winning picture of a transformed
and globalized university. In reality we now have a university in
crisis, contradictory, with a worsening of the transmitted knowledge
and exploiting the people that are producing it condemning them to a
life and working condition of uncertainty.

If will be each university
the one who still continues to administer the low financial resources
by acting with a logic typical of financial companies, education (no
longer a public service and a common good) will continue to legitimate
itself in the form of an efficiency to buy at increasingly heavy costs,
generating an unsustainable system for its inners students and
workers. We do not want to discuss the concept of "sustainable
development" (now a container term, often  used in rhetoric), but
rather start from the real processes and understand the operative
choices this word refers to. If for sustainable development they mean
the way in which the supranational organizations extend the property
and the profit on natural resources (allowing, for example, the
commercialization of renewable energy), and if the politics based on
this concept allow the constitution of new mechanisms of control and
exploitation of  territories, we won’t stand for it! As students from
Turin and other Italian cities, we are organizing meetings and
assemblies to discuss and deal with all the international experiences
that have been committing themselves to the issue of the relationship
between global crisis and the crisis of the university.

We will also
discuss
with people acting,  like we are doing, against the crisis
and with all the movements that have risen to defend their territories
from "unsustainable" development models (such as the
movement against
the High Speed Train (Tav) in Piedmont,
against the construction of a
military USA post in Vicenza,
against the privatization of water
resources
, r
against nuclear, etc.).. During the G8 of the universities
we will organize a national (and international!) demonstration on the 19
th of May in Turin, in clear contrast to the Summit and we  invite everybody to participate. The assemblies will begin on the 17th  of May. During this day we will discuss with the movements risen in defence of the territory, the common goods, etc.

On the 18th  will
take place the debate organised by Edu Factory and dedicated to the
university and crisis of the university, its transformations, global
crisis and students movements.
During the same night  we will focus
on the international issue  with speakers from Greece, France and all
the other countries that want to participate.

1 – the demonstration in Rome and the two-days assembly at La Sapienza university, including the three documents that the nationals assembly produced.

2 – the forthcoming general strike (12 dec 2008) in which the public education reform will be one of the contentious issues at stake

3 – our relationship with the other groups mobilized in Florence (doctoral students, university students etc.) and protests that we can/want/should organize with them

4 – the round table: problems that we could face in beginning a real "conflict" with the EUI chiefs, opportunity that we should explore in order to organize it anyway etc

UPDATE: Tomorrow SPECIAL TRAIN to Rome! Meeting at 5.30 at Santa Maria Novella Station!

This morning there was an update concerning the train to go to Rome. There is a slight change due to unexpected good news:

1 – we will have a SPECIAL TRAIN waiting for us at the train station of SANTA MARIA NOVELLA

2 – the gathering is at 5:30 A.M. in SANTA MARIA NOVELLA, this means that we will arrive in time for the beginning of the demonstration or, anyway, earlier than previously expected. We are no more leaving at 6.45.

3 – the price will be about 10 EURO and you can give the money to the people organizing the special train once you are in the train

4 – this means that IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO BUY THE TRAIN TICKET ANYMORE (for those who already did it, the train ticket will be valid till January and you can also ask for a total refund, see here http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=384082b0368ea110VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRD#2)

5 – We don’t know yet if the special train is also coming back. Remember, however, that the days after the demonstration (15 and 16 Nov) there will be a national assembly of all the university people (students, Ph.D, researchers) who mobilized in the last month. So you may be interested in attending it. And it’s really relaxing and simply beautiful having a beer after the demonstration in the San Lorenzo neighborhood…

Please, send give these informations to anyone you know who is planning to come to the demostration tomorrow. Even more important: probably tomorrow it will not rain in Rome…

Tutti a Roma! National demonstration in defence of the Italian University!

"IUE in movimento" will participate to the national demonstration scheduled in Rome on Friday 14.

We have discussed the different logistic solutions for going en masse to Rome, joining our forces with the colleagues of Florence University.
We have finally opted for going to Rome by train, travelling on the Interregionale nr. 2305 leaving from Santa Maria Novella at 6.45 am and reaching Roma Termini at 10.19.

The appointment is at 6.00 am at Santa Maria Novella station.

Please keep in mind these points:

    1. We ask you all to write back to euinmovimento@inventati.org saying whether you are coming or not. This would help us to be better organized.

    2. Each one of us will buy the train ticket by her/his own.  The price is  € 15.80. You might buy the ticket in advance or the same morning. Please remember that if you buy online on trenitalia.com website, you’ll have still to print out the ticket in the station (there is no e-ticket and it’s not sufficient to tell the PNR number to the train controller)

    3. Please invite other EUI colleagues to join our group to Rome demonstration, particularly those who are not in our mailing list

    4. Each one of us will then decide how and when to come back to Florence.

    5. This demonstration is THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE  this student movement has undertaken till now. You can’t miss it!

All informations on the route of the national demonstration are at http://www.flcgil.it/content/download/63119/406660/version/2/file/Piantina+percorso+manifestazione+nazionale+a+Roma+del+14+novembre+2008.pdf
